the joy experiments

The Joy Experiments is a solo show based on poems written by Kate Frank, adapted into a play by Kate Frank & Esme Rodriguez Vaandrager. It was first performed in May 2012 at Hampshire College, with Kate in the starring role. That version of the show was directed & choreographed by Esme.

Kate Frank, The Joy Experiments, Hampshire College 2012

It is a play about transformation & loss. An attempt to perform what bell hooks terms, “the alchemy of grief.” The subjects of the show are women, queer women, & moths; a scientist who may be her subject, a woman who may be a moth, a lover. It is a map of a potential path to joy, written on the body, tracing the lines trauma has left.
